Da Claudio Italian Restaurant, Motherwell

Motherwell isn’t somewhere that I’d usually go for a nice meal…mainly due to the complete lack of restaurants. It’s definitely a town for houses, schools and a smattering of small businesses.

There is one exception to that rule, and that exception is the long-standing Da Claudio Italian Restaurant. It’s a firm favourite amongst locals, and for good reason!

I settled into my cosy little corner seat of this intimate and cosy restaurant with a glass of Garganega which is one of the nicest wines I’ve tasted for a while – it’s so soft and delicately flavoured. I went off my wine for a while, so this eased me back!

Wine connoisseurs will want to know the following: Casato Manin, Mabis, Veneto/Italy. It’s described as ‘A citrus fruit bouquet which turns to delicate pear, almond and white flowers on the palate’.

We took our time with the menu – there are plenty options so we scoured it carefully to ensure we didn’t miss anything tasty!

Tobermory Trotta e Capers

This is so simple – fresh and delicious. This was some seriously beautiful trout – thin slices of fresh and perfectly smoked Tobermory trout which was simply topped with capers, olive oil and lemon. Perfection.

Funghi con Crema di Gorgonzola

I could’ve eaten infinite amounts of these mushrooms which were cooked in a creamy gorgonzola sauce. Probably the most delicious creamy sauces I’ve had with mushrooms – the Gorgonzola gives it a great flavour without the sauce actually tasting of the cheese. I’m not a huge blue cheese fan, so to others who are the same: don’t let that put you off! The dish is served with toasted Italian bread for dipping and mopping.

Bistecca con Gorgonzola e Funghi

The steak menu is slightly different here – you don’t order a steak, then a sauce, then sides – you order a prescribed steak ‘package’. My boyfriend ordered the sirloin steak with onions, mushrooms and gorgonzola sauce. He’d tried my starter with this sauce and knew he was into a treat with this main course! His steak was cooked perfectly and the dish came with such beautiful crispy fries. Y’all know how much I love my fries! Especially dipped in that Gorgonzola sauce….yum!

Stufato al Frutti di Mare

I read the word ‘copper pot’ in the description and I was totally sold on this seafood cataplana! The stew contained a real assortment of seafood – I honestly can’t even name all the different fish in there but there were at least 3 types of fish. Those were married up with mussels, small lobster tails, king prawns and crayfish. The broth was a gorgeous tomato, garlic and chilli affair laced with potato dumplings (gnocchi). It was absolutely to die for, but I couldn’t finish it – it was such a generous portion!

This blog has been a long time coming as I’ve visited Da Claudio several times in my life but never quite got around to documenting it! I guarantee that anyone would love this place as there is a huge range of dishes to choose from and everything is gorgeous.

It’s a family run restaurant and you’re made to feel like old friends the minute you walk through the door. It’s worth travelling to, if you’re not lucky enough to live in Motherwell!
